Growing Disc Golf in Edmonton
The Edmonton Disc Golf Association (EDGA) has been working to increase participation in their women’s league since its inception in 2021. Although there has been increases in the number of women who participate through the creation of a women’s league, keeping their community engaged throughout the year was important to help with retention and player development. Through this project, the EDGA offered indoor training camps to provide an opportunity for women of all ages and abilities to be introduced to and/or improve their existing skills at disc golf. These free clinics were offered in a centrally located indoor facility, so that weather, transportation and cost were not barriers to participation.
- The project utilized local women professional disc golf players to coach and teach the basics of disc golf at the camps and provided information on the upcoming season offerings.
- There were 46 women that attended the clinics and many of the participants went on to join the women's league, and/or play in the women's only tournament "She's Up First!".
- Through conversations and social media impressions, EDSA heard that many of the women that played in these events have started forming meaningful social connections with the women that are long established in the community and look forward to continuing to grow the disc golf community in Edmonton.
