Alberta Fencing Association - Safe & Welcoming Road to Olympics
In its pursuit of excellence and commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, the Alberta Fencing Association (AFA) embarked on a transformative journey to reinforce its dedication to Safe Sport and good governance. Through strategic initiatives, the AFA addressed evolving safety needs, updated policies, and engaged in comprehensive training sessions led by Sport Law expert Cheryl Humphrey. These endeavors culminated in workshops on good governance and strategic planning, strengthening the association's foundation. Moreover, a dedicated Safe Sport Training event enhanced awareness and understanding, marking a significant step towards creating a secure and respectful fencing community. As the AFA continues to champion Safe Sport practices and strategic excellence, it stands poised to build a safer, stronger, and more inclusive fencing community.
Commitment to Safe Sport and Governance: Establishing a dedicated SafeSport committee and updating provincial policies reflected AFA's commitment to evolving safety requirements. Policy updates were disseminated through digital platforms to ensure transparency and community awareness.
Engagement with Sport Law: Collaborating with Sport Law, the AFA conducted workshops under Cheryl Humphrey's guidance. The comprehensive Good Governance Training for the Board of Directors and a subsequent strategic plan development workshop solidified the association's understanding of governance and strategic planning.
Safe Sport Training Event: The AFA hosted a crucial Safe Sport Training event led by Kristin Noonan. Covering topics such as understanding Safe Sport, types of maltreatment, 'Rule of Two,' responsible communication, bystander intervention, and True Sport principles, the session aimed to create a secure environment for all members.
Recognizing the importance of effective communication and member engagement, the AFA adjusted its project scope. The association now stands equipped with updated policies, enhanced governance understanding, and a roadmap for future decision-making. This project lays a solid foundation for a culture of safety, respect, and accountability within the Alberta Fencing Association, inspiring confidence and inclusivity among athletes, coaches, and families.
