Accessible and Inclusive Rhythmic Gymnastics

The Edmonton Rhythmic Gymnastics Club’s Inclusive and Accessible Recreational Rhythmic Gymnastics program was designed to provide free classes for girls with intersected barriers to participate in physical activities. The classes provided an opportunity for a fun activity that combines creativity and musical expression with physical activity. The basic techniques of rhythmic movement were taught with an emphasis on group interaction.

This program was targeted at those who might have barriers that would prohibit their participation in sport and physical activity programs. Newcomer families also received Action for Healthy Community Sport Resource Booklets which included information on how to access sport and recreation opportunities in Edmonton, including financial supports offered from Kidsport Edmonton and Jumpstart. The program also encouraged the girls to sign up for the club’s summer camp and recreation programs.

Based on survey results from the parents, the program was able show the following impact:

  • 100% reported that the program contributed to girls' general physical activities.
  • 60% reported that the program had social impact on their child, eg. communication with peers, team-building, etc.
  • 50% reported the safe and fun environment.
  • 60% of girls built self-confidence.
  • "The programme is amazing, thank you for giving us this opportunity to attend the classes and enjoy 3 months of gymnastics lessons. Thank you so much."
  • "Great program. My daughter loves to dance and practice different exercises. She enjoys making new friends."
